What is nature? If we examine nature through the lens of time, we see a continuous transformation. Volcanoes erupt, creating new terrain that initially seems unnatural. Over time, however, lava integrates with the existing soil. Through erosion and other natural processes, the once-alien lava becomes an intrinsic part of the landscape, symbolizing nature’s capacity for absorption and transformation. Similarly, architecture, though initially unnatural, can gradually embed and integrate with its environment, evolving into a new form of nature over time.

Iceland, shaped by volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago, boasts an exotic and beautiful terrain. Our design proposes a structure that mimics this natural landscape, eroded by time and nature. By integrating programs that serve locals and tourists, this approach creates a harmonious blend of architecture and nature, establishing a new icon in Iceland.

The design transforms the traditional ski cabin into a year-round viewpoint cabin using the concept of LOOP. This sustainable building system includes re-programming the space, adding features for tourists, hikers, and locals, and making it accessible year-round. The cabin incorporated geothermal heating and a rainwater collection system for sustainability. Flexible interior spaces allow for reconfiguration, enhancing the building’s functionality and eco-friendliness.

The design utilizes local materials, including a combination of concrete and volcanic ash, to replicate the surrounding volcanic rocks. The facade blends with nature, while the warm wood interiors create a homely feel. The cabin itself aims to be a year-round tourist attraction, serving as a rest point for travelers and hikers. This iconic beacon symbolizes winter but offers diverse possibilities in summer, leveraging its proximity to nearby tourist spots and creating a new Myvatn region icon.
